Two students show helpful ways to think about a simple division problem.
Before you watch, ask yourself these questions:
- Is knowing the answer to a math problem (even something as simple as 2 + 7) the same as knowing what the problem is asking? Why or why not?
- What is a problem like 21 divided by 4 asking for? Try to explain it in words, not a number answer.
- What does it mean when a division problem has a remainder?
Multiplying Fractions
Two students explain how to visualize a fraction multiplication problem.
Before you watch, ask yourself these questions:
- What does it look like to multiply fractions, like two-thirds times one-fifth?
- When could visualizing fractions help you to double check your work and when would it be too difficult to use?
- After you finish multiplying two fractions, what should you always check for before saying the problem is done?
Order of Operations
Mr. Petty and three students talk about Order of Operations. They also work out some examples and learn from their mistakes, practicing their best growth mindset skills.
Before you watch, ask yourself these questions:
- Why would it be a problem if we didn't have an order of operations?
- What is the correct Order of Operations and what's a good way to remember it?
- What is the left to right rule?
- Why do you think mistakes in math can be a good thing when you're learning math?
